The kitchen is one of the places in the home that presents several defects. This makes sense because it houses appliances, plumbing, and electrical outlets. All these elements can have problems, and the older the house, the more likely it is to have them.
Here are common defects in a kitchen:
Sink – The sink may have leaks at the faucet handles, the water supply under the sink, or the drain pipe. The faucet may also continue to drip once the water is turned off. Sometimes, the finish of the sink itself can be damaged.
Countertops and cabinets – Countertops can be unstable, posing a safety risk. They can also be burned, stained, chipped, or cracked. Panels may be damaged or poorly fitted.
Flooring – Tiled floors may have cracks. Vinyl or wood floors can be scratched or grooved. Sometimes, the installation was not done professionally.
Windows – Windows can be difficult to open or painted in a way that renders them unusable. Sometimes, they can be broken or cracked. Broken thermal seals (fog or moisture between the panes) are also a common problem.
Electrical outlets – Although their installation may be relatively recent, it is recommended that outlets located less than 1.5 meters from a water source be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). This protection can be implemented directly on the outlet or from the circuit breaker.
*This is not an exhaustive list of problems that can be encountered in a kitchen, but it includes the most common defects.
